With lead single ‘Wanted’ – a fiery Elvis-gone-folk roar of an opener that sees frontman Dan Heptinstall saluting London, New York and Cairo in a song “about looking for life in the cities we’d visit”, The Devil, The Heart & The Fight comes out fists first.

Check out the lyric video for ‘Wanted’.

If their folk debut album (Forge & Flagon, 2012) celebrated the sticks and their punkier second (Down On Deptford Broadway, 2015) blinked in the bright lights of London; their rocked-up third sees them go global. Pieced together while on the road, and recorded over five weeks in Newcastle Under Lyme’s Silk Mill Studio in May 2016 with producer Tristan Ivemy (Frank Turner, The Holloways), it is Skinny Lister’s most far-reaching, exciting and accomplished album yet. It’s a full-on rock record that splashes even more punk vigour and 80s pop elements across their fervent folk canvas, taking in hints of Adam Ant and The Clash. It also brings the folk storytelling tradition bang up to date with its brutally honest and close-to-the-knuckle lyrics of real-life stories (‘Geordie Lad’, ‘Charlie’) and on-the-road mayhem (the Pogue-ish ‘Hamburg Drunk’).

A mature, vibrant and varied record, it mingles classic Skinny folk romances (‘Grace’, ‘Reunion’) with epic rock takes on rafter-rattling shanties (‘Beat It From The Chest’) and hearty Dexys-style tributes to the fans they meet on the road (‘Fair Winds & Following Seas’), plus a hitherto unseen darker side. Take the deceptively upbeat ‘Injuries’, Dan’s ode on the bruising nature of life, or ‘Devil In Me’, in which Lorna comes on like a particularly melodic Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction: “The devil in me will come for you and you’ll pay the price for not being very nice… you took my life, I’m taking yours, that seems to me a fair trade”. Gulp.

The Devil, The Heart & The Fight is like Skinny’s previous albums gone backpacking; expanding its horizons, full of adventure, discovering itself and doing things it regrets in the morning. Have heart, ye devils, join the fight.

2016 has already been an exceptional year for the twelve-legged party machine that is Skinny Lister. Kicking things off was a support tour across Germany, Austria and Switzerland with labelmate, and fan, Frank Turner. Then it was a quick hop across the pond for Flogging Molly’s festival Salty Dog Cruise around the Bahamas, before heading out on their own East Coast headline tour with label pals Beans On Toast and Will Varley in tow. Many of the shows were sold out well in advance and signalled a big step up for the band Stateside, with an ever-increasing fanbase begging for more.

Since then, concentration has turned to recording the band’s third studio album, set for release in the autumn, on Xtra Mile Recordings. Lorna from the band says: “The last year has been amazing! The Xtra Mile Recordings family has welcomed us with open arms and touring the States, Europe and the UK with labelmates Frank Turner, Beans on Toast and Will Varley has been incredible. The excitement doesn’t stop there though; we’ve not stopped writing and feel very excited about what’s cooking!”

Album number three follows 2015’s Down On Deptford Broadway, a rum-soaked blend of English folk and punk rock anarchy that received rapturous acclaim, with The Guardian, declaring: “It packs enough punch to steamroll a saloon brawl.” More information on the album will be unveiled soon.

Before the new album and UK headline tour, Skinny Lister will be no doubt at a festival near you throughout the summer. Confirmed so far are: Download Festival, Boomtown Festival, Highfield in Germany, and many more to be announced.

MARCH 2016

03 London @ The Monarch
07 Bristol @ Stag and Hounds
08 Southampton @ The Joiners
09 Cambridge @ Portland Arms
11 Norwich @ Arts Centre

Fizzy Brain, the band’s third album, was produced by Owen Turner (Bearsuit, Magoo, The Broken Family Band) at Sickroom Studios in Norfolk. Following on from their previous two, the self-titled debut from 2010 and Dance Before You Sleep from 2014, they've collectively cranked the vitality and volume while building melody, texture and drama with violins, gang vocals and amplification, all the while retaining the pace and dynamics that brought Ducking Punches to such live acclaim.

Speaking of the album, frontman Dan Allen says: “We are so proud of this record, it was written much more collaboratively than previous releases and I think this has made for far stronger songs. It carries similar themes to Dance Before You Sleep in that it touches on loss, mental health, death and love. However, it is a far more hopeful record. This one was so cathartic albeit it often heartbreaking to write and I really hope everyone digs it.”

With a soaring sound that seems only to get larger with each album, these songs are as stirring as they are a call-to-arms, as blaring and exhilarating as they can be heart-rending and tender.

Originally the solo acoustic songs of vocalist and guitarist Dan Allen, Ducking Punches are now a punk/rock quintet. Hailing from Norwich, the band has nearly 1,000 shows under their belt, including a European tour in 2014 with Frank Turner and Andrew Jackson Jihad, as well as festival sets at Reading and Leeds, Download, Groezrock, FEST and support slots alongside The Hold Steady, The Menzingers, Teenage Bottlerocket, Franz Nicolay and Leatherface.

Previous praise for Ducking Punches:

“…infectious folk punk” Already Heard

“Ducking Punches are best witnessed live – there can’t be many bands that threaten to blow The Hold Steady off stage as they did.” Outline Magazine

“This record exudes the spirit, and true meaning of punk from the core of the band. This is not a folk punk record that’s full of jigs about drinking, or even filled with protest songs. ‘Dance Before You Sleep’ is nine tracks of well-written, cohesive songs that are straight from the heart, which is exactly the place that punk should come from.” Punktastic on Dance Before You Sleep.

“Ducking Punches … delivered a frankly majestic set of emotion-soaked punk rock. Not only were the songs the band played hugely passionate and real, but it was clear that they absolutely poured their hearts into their on-stage performance too.” - The Punk Archive.
